After thyphoon Ondoy flooded many areas in Metro-Manila the next thing the authorities were concerned of was how to house/feed/relocate thousands of typhoon victims not only in the Capital Region but to other affected areas in the country. Then came the cleaning, of houses and streets so people can go back to their homes. It’s a huge task which up to now is still going on.

In the Bible God sent strong winds to dry and clean the lands after the flood so people can habitate the earth once more. Of course Noah thank God and there was great rejoicing because God has promised never to flood the world again.

But we are still flooded right now. God is not flooding the entire world, He allowed perhaps natural calamities to come to clean the earth, to remind people not to harm the world, and to lead a righteous and clean life.

In line with this I feel disappointed too that after typhoon Ondoy as if we have not learned a lesson at all. We still litter on the streets and throw all kinds of garbage anywhere. The graffiti gangs (mostly young people) are on the streets again painting road signs, walls, and any surface they could roll their brush or spray. It’s not an art, if ever there are it could hardly be called art, it’s just disgusting marks.

You could imagine an street sign that could no longer give direction to the motorists because these vandals already covered them with grafitti. I am mad, and I could hardly control myself out of disappointment. Some people invest time and money to make our environment clean and beautiful only to be littered and vandalized by misdirected vandals. I’m sure they are trying to say something, but the way they express their feelings is not only unlawful it is also immoral.

Now let’s ask what is our government doing? Again the government also ask what are you people doing? Then we ask the parents of the vandals, what did you teach your children? Actually dealing with vandals and enforcing anti-littering ordinances is not only the domain of law enforcers but the entire community. Education is one best thing we could do. But how? Who are these vandals, How do we know them. Not unless they are caught in act that they can be apprehended by law enforcers or through citizens arrest. It’s a collective community action to safeguard our environment and to spare our places from vandals. And what about graft and corruption in the government, are our leaders and authorities mindful of this?

As it is written in the Bible: (Daniel 5:24-26)

24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.

25 “This is the inscription that was written:
       Mene , Mene , Tekel , Parsin [a]

26 “This is what these words mean:
Mene [b] : God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.

God has numbered our days, not unless we lead a clean and righteous life, we certainly lose our souls at the end because we keep on ignoring God’s call for us to come back to Him.
