Lessons on the Evil of Corruption from the Word of God:
22 Cast your cares on the LORD
and he will sustain you;
he will never let the righteous fall.
23 But you, O God, will bring down the wicked
into the pit of corruption;
bloodthirsty and deceitful men
will not live out half their days.
But as for me, I trust in you.
God is a prayer-hearing God. Such he has always been, and he is still as ready to hear prayer as ever. The most encouraging principle of prayer, and the most powerful plea in prayer, is, to look upon him as our King and our God. David also prays to a sin-hating God. Sin is folly, and sinners are the greatest of all fools; fools of their own making. Wicked people hate God; justly are they hated of him, and this will be their endless misery and ruin. Let us learn the importance of truth and sincerity, in all the affairs of life. Liars and murderers resemble the devil, and are his children, therefore it may well be expected that God should abhor them. These were the characters of David’s enemies; and such as these are still the enemies of Christ and his people. (From Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary of the Bible)
News about Arroyo’s government possibility of losing US government assistance due to worsening corruption record has been posted in the internet.
According to Center for Global Development, the Philippines, the Philippines failed this year’s the “control of corruption” indicator set by the US-funded Millennium Challenge Corp. “The Philippines fails the control of corruption indicator after passing it in each year since the inception of the MCC,” according to the the September 26 CGD report d written by by Amy Crone and Sheila Herrling.
“The $21 million threshold program in the Philippines, aimed at fighting corruption, was approved on July 26, 2006 and will end November 21, 2008, coinciding with the weakening of the corruption score,” the report explained.
Senator Mar Roxas said in reaction to the CGD report “is a big slap on the integrity of the government and will definitely adversely affect international confidence in the Arroyo Administration. “This only confirms what people know hear and feel about the shady transactions of this government and the deeply entrenched corruption in several government agencies.”
“Instead of shaping up because of its bad governance record as the end of President Arroyo’s term in 2010 nears, the administration appears to be concentrating on ways to prolong its stay in power through an unacceptable Charter Change project. We cannot accept this,” the aspiring presidential candidate added.
What is new about corruption in the Philippines? It has been here since the US government gave back to the Philippines its freedom and autonomy to exist as an independent state. Attempts to clean the government from corruption had been initiated by the three branches of the government over the years but to no avail. Despite billions of pesos invested to establish a corrupt free government, the situation only worsen. Corruption is all over from top to the bottom.
The Bible is very clear about this, that no human effort could entirely change the fate of the world except that of God. Like the psalmist if only people yield their hearts to God, then God could transform them to be honest leaders, faithful followers, and patriotic citizens of their country and will glorify the Lord.
But greed has hardened in the heart of men. “Let us learn the importance of truth and sincerity, in all the affairs of life. Liars and murderers resemble the devil, and are his children, therefore it may well be expected that God should abhor them,” the commentary states. Our leaders should understand that refusing the admonition will bring them “endless misery and ruin.”I pray that God shall touch the hearts of our leaders and people unto righteousness that there will be love, harmony, and progress in this land.
