I like a Cabinet Secretary when he said that that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is the number one saleslady in the Country. I hope he is sincere in saying it because it is not that easy to become a saleslady. If you want to find out why I say it, go to any mall or a department store and see how salesladies earn their salary for a day. They have to stand up most of the time attending to their customers.
One time former heavy weight boxing champion George Foreman fondly called a preacher a great salesman. Every opportunity is a selling point for a good salesman. Even at the time of mourning for the lost of a loved one, as a salesman the preacher sales hope and to the grieving family. As a number one sales lady in the country what does the President sell? The secretary said, the President is selling the good image of the country and opportunities for investment in her trip abroad. How good is she as a saleslady? Well just count on the millions of dollars of investments that came in to the country which contributed so much in improve the state of our economy.
When I became a medical sales representative, one of the things I was told about salesmanship is to be proud of but to be honest with your product, be sincere with your customers, and to develop a positive attitude always. There are other tips I received but these are the only things I gave importance.
If the president talks about the improving economy of the country, what is she referring to? The climate of investment alone or the general economic situation of the country which includes poverty and growing hopelessness of the people. As a sincere salesman would you not also talk about the pressing problems and issues in the country so your customers or investor may know the situation they are in before they invest millions of their capital?
In my experience with salespeople, there are aggressive as well as objective individuals in this business. The aggressive one are more for profit, they do everything to convince their prospective customers even to the extent of lying. The objective salespeople do not only tell the good things about their products even the flaws if there is any. Honesty means more than profit. It is the trust and confidence of their customers that they are trying to win. And this is even more lasting than any consideration for profit or monetary reward.
Last Saturday my wife ask me to replenish our depleted stock of food grocery items at home. She handed me a very long list so I quickly pulled out two thousand pesos bill in my wallet. She just laughed, as if my two thousand pesos will bring me nowhere. I explained to her that most of my earning last week were all went to the payment of electric bill, telephone bill, services, etc. Anyway I pulled out my remaining one thousand pesos and gave it to her. She smiled and said, “I will just add if this is not enough.” She quickly kissed me on the lips as she rushed to a waiting car with two ladies inside. But there was another lady coming so they have to wait. I don’t know what came to her mind, she get out of the car and approached me to where I was standing.
“Why did you come back, did you forget something,” I asked her.
“No,” she said. She came to my left and whispered something to my ear. “I’d rather be a pauper living with you than enjoying all the riches in the world but will lose the opportunity to live with you forever.” Then she immediately left me before I could say something in response.
